I love seeing wildflowers along roadsides. Do you?

It is drawing close to the end of summer here, and along the roadsides, there are the remnants of wildflowers like this Golden Everlasting Daisy (Xerochrysum viscosum), an Australian native and one of my favourites. It is an opportunist plant in disturbed areas, like roadsides. The shiny yellow bracts are stiff and papery, and the flower heads provide food for native butterflies and larvae.

This is drawing number 715 on the scroll, with 2285 days (and drawings) to go until 2030.

I think the wildfires, flooding and winds we have seen in Australia this season demonstrate the effects of the increasing temperatures. Our planet is responding. Don't forget, we can also do things to support our natural environment.

Here are some fungi images drawn from a couple of my exhibitions.

For me, there is something really engaging about fungi, particularly when they start to age and dry out a little. They have so much character, and their friting bodies are all we humans see of the vast universe in which they live and interact beneath the surface of the soil.

They are clever in the ways they have established relationships with trees and other plants, passing nutrients and information through their subterranean networks.

Each of these works is in watercolour, graphite and gouache.

I have been working on other aspects of my art of late, so here are a few little numbers on black from the recent past that I really like. I hope you will too! Each of these works has a story for me - I wonder what they invoke for you!

All the works are in graphite with watercolour on white watercolour paper, which has had the background painted in with black gauche. A slow process!

"We long to comprehend our blue planet"

Our oceans wash up many jewels and treasures from its depths, which include the animals that live in its depths in the way of exoskeletons, shells and eggs. Here are a few that captured my imagination.

The violence of storms throws up so many interesting things from the deep. Seaweed and crab skeletons lying on the sand after a night of stormy weather. Mermaid’s purses (shark egg husks). Encrusted sheiks and stones.

What stories would people’s imagination have made of these things in days past. Will we be able to tell such stories in the future? For the health of our oceans and planet, we need to look after our oceans. We don't want to lose these treasures.

Often given only a casual glance the tiny details of the plants, cicadas, butterflies and grasshoppers that share our environment are overlooked.

They are often seen as mere flashes of colour or sound.

All the subjects in these watercolour and graphite works are technically “dead”, but the reality is that they are merely in a state of quiescence ... they are dormant, temporarily quiet ... as they move from their current state to the next.  It is in their quiescence that their fine colours and details have been captured.

An oldie, but I still love these little works.

Do you have many in your garden?

Moths and butterflies are so important to plants and to people. Areas rich in these insects are also rich in other invertebrates, collectively providing many benefits including pollination and natural pest control. They are a great quality of life and habitat indicator.

Butterflies have been around for at least 50 million years, and are a flagship species for conservation in general, and for invertebrates in particular.

There are over 250,000 species of moths and butterflies. If you have them, look after your local habitat so you can keep them. If you don't see them, start improving your habitat to attract them! Good luck!!
